Newcastle Paediatrician Dr Kate Tenney is a children’s doctor at Hunter Valley Paediatrics

Kate is a paediatrician with 10 years of experience, passionate about providing compassionate and comprehensive care for children and their families.

Growing up in a large family in rural New South Wales, she learned early on the importance of community and connection. Since relocating locally in 2014, she has embraced the opportunity to become a part of this wonderful community.

While her expertise spans all areas of paediatric medicine, she has a particular interest in the care of infants and children. She takes a holistic approach to medicine, believing that understanding the family unit and social background is key to delivering the best possible care. She strives to make families feel welcomed, valued, and supported, creating an environment where both children and parents can feel comfortable and confident in their healthcare journey.

Outside of work, Kate leads an active lifestyle, with a particular love for team sports—especially hockey. She also enjoys spending time with her young family, which keeps her grounded and reminds her daily of the joys and challenges that come with parenthood.

Please note Dr Kate Tenney’s books are currently closed, and will re-open in October 2025.

Why did you want to become a kids' doctor instead of a doctor for grown-ups?

I grew up in a big family, and I’ve always loved spending time with the kids at the ‘kids table.’ I was always the go-to person when it came to babysitting! I really enjoy the laughter and energy that kids bring, and I feel like I can make a real difference in their lives.

Being a kids' doctor lets me help them feel better and have a positive impact on their health, and that makes me really happy!

What is your favourite dinosaur?

I love the Brontosaurus as it’s got such a long neck and was one of the biggest dinosaurs!

What do you do when you’re not being a doctor?

I spend time with my family as well as enjoy playing hockey.

If you could pick any superpower what would it be?

I would love to be able to fly, it would be so cool to just jump up and soar around the world!
